Before television, the people got their news from newspapers and at the movie theatre in newsreels shown befrore the main feature.  These were especially popular with home-bound Americans during the Second World War to keep abreast of how our boys were doing over there. 

During this time, the U.S. government also produced informational and promotional films, using the talents of Hollywood directors who were serving their country in the military at the time. These were important tools in keeping the public informed and to keep the fires of patriotism stoked.
